A planting design, grown forward in time

A planting plan is a drawing of a day that hasn’t happened yet — the yard at maturity, years after install. This is an experiment in showing that day instead of drawing it: a real design on a real parcel, rendered in three dimensions and moved through time, running in your browser.

What you’re looking at

A planting design placed on its parcel — the plants where the plan puts them, from the plan’s own coordinates, with the buildings where the parcel record puts them. Time is the fourth dimension: step the same design to three, ten, and twenty years of growth, through all four seasons, from three camera positions. A plan promises a yard; this shows the yard it promises.

Why it’s in Labs

Labs is where things ship before they are finished — in the open, on a real address, so the questions they raise are real ones. What’s here works, and it will change. When something stops being an experiment it gets a name and a place in the product; until then it lives on this page.
