Requirements
- Apply and get approval before removing any lawn.
- Mulch the converted area.
- Planted areas on low-volume drip with a pressure regulator, filter and emitters; where part of a lawn stays, the sprinklers are adjusted so they don't water the converted area.
- Call Public Works at (209) 895-8060 for a pre-removal inspection before removing any grass; projects started without city approval don't qualify.
- Apply online at pattersonca.gov or at City Hall (2nd floor); finish within 90 days of the signed agreement, then call for the final inspection. The check comes within 30 days of it.
- For City of Patterson water customers inside city limits with an account in good standing: maintained lawns at single-family or multifamily homes, or at commercial, institutional or industrial sites with their own irrigation. Dead lawns don't qualify.
- Cover the converted area with 2 to 3 inches of mulch that lets air and water through; at least 40% living plant cover at maturity. Rock gardens aren't permitted, and potted plants don't count.
- In a front yard, at least half must stay landscaped.
- Artificial turf is allowed only if a licensed contractor installs it, it is permeable, non-flammable polyethylene or nylon with a 5-year warranty, and it sits at least 3 inches from any plant.
Steps, in order
- Apply on City of Patterson Public Works (Water)’s site and wait for approval. Lawn removed before approval usually does not qualify.
- Remove the lawn and plant to the requirements above.
