Requirements
- Apply and get approval before removing any lawn.
- Planting density: 1 new ground-planted drought-tolerant plant per 200 sq ft, 3 plants minimum.
- Mulch the converted area.
- Replace irrigated lawn with drought-tolerant plants on drip, artificial turf, or permeable paving; sprinkler heads serving the lawn removed and capped below the surface; converted area covered with 3 inches of mulch or bark or 2 inches of rock, except ground covers and seeded native grasses.
- Schedule a pre-inspection by phone (805-227-7250) before removing any turf or irrigation; the City then starts the application and gives you a copy.
- $0.50 per sq ft converted, up to $500 per water account or property, and never more than the receipts show you spent.
- At least 200 sq ft of turf must be removed; a thin margin around a yard does not qualify.
- Finish within 120 days of the pre-inspection, then call for the post-inspection with receipts for plants, cover and irrigation; the check is mailed within 30 days.
- Tenants attach a consent letter from the owner.
- Hardscape in the converted area must be permeable, such as decomposed granite or permeable pavers.
- New construction and areas with no landscape do not qualify; the program is not retroactive and may change or end when funds run out.
Steps, in order
- Apply on City of Paso Robles’s site and wait for approval. Lawn removed before approval usually does not qualify.
- Remove the lawn and plant to the requirements above.
- Send what the program page asks for once the work is done.
