Requirements
- Apply and get approval before removing any lawn.
- Mulch the converted area.
- Any new watering system is automatic low-volume drip with a pressure regulator, filter and emitters under 2 gallons per hour; sprinklers left on the remaining lawn must not spray the converted area.
- The lawn must be maintained, with its own irrigation system; dead lawns don't qualify.
- Submit the application in person, by mail or by email (dhanson@morrobayca.gov), and have the City's pre-conversion site review before removing any lawn: (805) 772-6265.
- Cover the area with 2 to 3 inches of permeable mulch: rock, bark, wood chips, or un-grouted flagstone or pavers. Permeable, non-flammable polyethylene or nylon artificial turf with a 5-year warranty also counts, ending 3 inches from any plant.
- Finish within 6 months and keep it 5 years; the check follows the final inspection within 30 to 60 days. One rebate per household.
Steps, in order
- Apply on City of Morro Bay Water’s site and wait for approval. Lawn removed before approval usually does not qualify.
- Remove the lawn and plant to the requirements above.
- Send what the program page asks for once the work is done.
