Requirements

  • Apply and get approval before removing any lawn.
  • Replant with low-water or native plants.
  • Mulch the converted area.
  • Cap every sprinkler and replace it with drip or micro-sprinkler irrigation.
  • Book the pre-inspection before any work (909-798-7527 ext. 2) and bring the list of plants you'll use. Grass must be there for it: brown lawns qualify, yards that are mostly dirt and weeds do not.
  • Plants must be low water use and listed on watersavinggardenfriendly.com. Cover the ground between plants with a weed barrier permeable to air and water, and put at least 2 inches of mulch at the base of every plant.
  • In a residential front yard, at least 80% of the visible area must be plant material and no more than 20% rock, mulch, gravel or decomposed granite (Municipal Code 18.168.120).
  • Or convert to irrigation-less groundcover at the same $1 per sq ft: permeable, needing no water, over a permeable weed barrier, with the irrigation capped or removed and any HOA approval first. Pavers must be spaced at least 1/4 inch apart; solid concrete does not qualify.
  • All of a customer's Redlands rebates together, including sprinklers and controllers, stop at $1,000 a fiscal year.
