  • Apply and get approval before removing any lawn.
  • Mulch the converted area.
  • No overhead spray in the converted area: remove or cap the lawn sprinklers, or convert to drip at 2.0 gallons per hour per emitter or less (no micro-sprays or bubblers). Hand watering is allowed.
  • Not retroactive: apply and get approval before removing any lawn. Start within 30 days of approval and finish within 90 days.
  • At least 300 sq ft (smaller if the whole lawn goes). The lawn must be maintained and watered by a working sprinkler system.
  • Plants must cover at least 50% of the area when grown; low-water, drought-tolerant or California native plants from the district’s list. At least one tree, existing or new.
  • A 3-inch layer of mulch; no artificial grass or impermeable surfaces in the rebated area.
  • Five photos before and five after, and a W-9.
