Requirements

  • Apply and get approval before removing any lawn.
  • Drought-tolerant plantings must be on drip or micro-spray, and the plan must cut water use by at least 50%. Eligible replacements: drought-tolerant plants suited to the area, mulch, rock, ungrouted stepping stones, permeable hardscape, or artificial turf.
  • Apply before any turf is removed; work starts only after the application is approved and a pre-job inspection is done.
  • Apply by mail or email (rebateinfo@madera.gov) on the City's PDF application, with a recent City of Madera utility bill, at least 5 dated color photos of the turf showing the house, street or fence, and a drawing with measurements and the planned irrigation changes.
  • $2.00 per sq ft for water-efficient landscape, or $3.00 per sq ft for artificial turf, up to 1,000 sq ft; $3,000 maximum.
  • Renters and tenants attach the owner's or property manager's written approval.
  • Finish within 60 days of the approval date; a final inspection follows and the check is mailed about 6 weeks after.
  • One rebate per account. HOAs, PUDs, condos, mobile homes, multifamily, and commercial, industrial or institutional meters that supply irrigation qualify. New construction does not. Vegetable gardens, water features, high-water-use or invasive plants do not qualify.
  • Turf reinstalled while you own the property means refunding the rebate plus a penalty equal to it.
  • First come, first served while funds last; the account must be current.
